Getting Started
Steps for Planning a Successful Event
Golf tournaments can be excellent ways to raise money and they are also an excellent tool for cultivating loyal donors and supporters, as well as for generating significant media attention. Many organizations have enjoyed great success by holding annual golf tournaments. Many companies also want to entertain or show appreciation to their staff or clients for the day. Step 1:
Form a Committee - To organize a golf tournament, the first thing needed is to put together a tournament committee. The individuals on the committee should be selected for their abilities to help with planning, selling sponsorships (if needed), organizing the event, generating publicity, and staffing the event. Step 2:
Select a Date - Consider what the weather conditions are likely to be like during the time you schedule the event so you can be certain to select a time that is well suited for golfing. It's also important to consider what other activities are going on in your community at that point in time. Try to avoid scheduling a tournament on a day that is already overcrowded with other activities and special events. Step 3:
Generate Publicity (Charity events) - To help ensure the success of your tournament, you will need to promote your event to people in your community. Word of mouth or actual advertising will help bring people to your event. Try to line up a celebrity to help promote your event or be the MC for your event. Step 4:
Recruit Sponsors - One of the main ways you'll generate money through a golf tournament is through sponsorship. Decide what types of sponsorship packages will be available and create a list of potential sponsors. Designate a committee person to chair the sponsorship part of your event. Select someone who is willing and able to approach local businesses and individuals to ask for financial support. It's a good idea to have one or two title sponsors, door prize sponsors, hole sponsors, grand prize sponsors, Dinner or lunch sponsors, etc. Step 5:
Recruit Golfers- Send out invitations to people you think may be interested in playing in your event. Research what other charities in your area are charging their golfers to play in their event. This will give you a good idea what you should charge each player. The bottom line is what is your objective in setting the price? Are you looking to raise money for a charity and make a substantial profit? Or are you simply wanting to entertain clients for the day and just cover your costs? |
